The motivation for this project is rooted in the reality that many young migrants and refugees face numerous challenges when it comes to accessing and engaging with the education system in their host countries. Research has shown that these young people often have low levels of education and qualifications, due to several reasons, such as poor or intermittent education in the country they come from, wars, economic conditions, and so on. This can be a barrier to their future employability and integration into society. Moreover, their mental health and well-being can also be negatively impacted by the stress and trauma of migration and resettlement. According to Global education monitoring report 2019 by Unesco), the educational performance of migrants is often inferior of that of natives, and the educational systems are finding it difficult to adapt to the specific needs of people leaving their country. It is also essential that professionals in education are well equipped to guarantee the inclusion of young migrants and refugees.
Providing resources to young refugees and migrants to ensure their social, cultural, and economic inclusion in their new home country and training youth workers to support these groups to gain socioeconomic independence
The project focuses on training youth workers in various organizations to support young migrants and refugees, particularly those with inadequate formal education who are limited in their opportunities for employment and socioeconomic independence. This will be achieved thanks to the following:
- Development of an Educational Package and training course, consisting in a well-structured training and learning course for youth workers to develop the skills and competences of young migrants and refugees with inadequate or postponed formal education in 3 development areas (literacy skills, cultural competences, digital readiness).
- Development of a seried of Digital Tools (eLearning platform and a learning pills) to provide young migrants and refugees with high-quality training and learning opportunities tailored to their specific needs for digital readiness.
- Creation of an Educational and Career Guide which will direct young migrants and refugees to make informed decisions on their education and, eventually, their steady transition to the labour market and smooth sociocultural integration.
- Development of a Practical Guide to Resilience to help young migrants and refugees to cope with mental health distress which is a common feature of long and difficult journeys and may prevent them from thriving in the educational environment.
Raising awareness on the importance of literacy skills development, cultural competences acquisition, and digital readiness to ensure a smooth of young migrants and refugees transition to the the formal educational system.
The project aims to raise awareness among the target groups, associated partners, decision-makers and other relevant stakeholders, on the importance of literacy skills development, cultural competences acquisition, and digital readiness for young migrants and refugees with inadequate or postponed formal education to ensure their smooth transition to the formal educational system.
The objectives are directly linked to the priorities of the project, since it encourages training and learning initiatives for the inclusion of the target population which are young migrants and refugees with inadequate or postponed formal education to help them steadily socially and culturally adapt to their new homes and be introduced to the labour market which will establish their economic independence. Throughout the project youth workers and other stakeholders will be actively involved in the design and implementation of the project, in order to ensure that it is responsive to their needs.
