Education is a key driver of social inclusion and personal development. However, many young migrants and refugees face significant barriers in accessing quality education due to inadequate or interrupted formal schooling. These challenges often lead to exclusion, limiting opportunities for their academic, social, and economic integration.

To address these pressing issues, the IncludeME! project has developed a Competence Framework—a comprehensive and practical guide designed to support educators, trainers, and organisations in their work with young migrants and refugees. This framework provides structured guidance on how to support learners in overcoming educational gaps and developing essential skills for personal growth and social integration.

Bridging the Language Gap Recognising the importance of accessibility, the Competence Framework has been translated into five languages:

  • Greek
  • Portuguese
  • Estonian
  • Italian
  • Slovenian

The includeME! Competence Framework is built on a holistic approach, recognising that young migrants and refugees require more than just language proficiency to succeed. The framework focuses on:

  1. Language and Communication Skills – Supporting learners in acquiring new languages while maintaining their mother tongue, fostering multilingual identities.
  2. Intercultural and Social Competences – Encouraging social cohesion by promoting mutual understanding, respect, and active participation in society.
  3. Civic and Digital Literacy – Equipping learners with essential knowledge about their rights, responsibilities, and the digital tools needed for modern education and employment.
  4. Personal Development and Well-being – Addressing psychological, emotional, and resilience-building strategies to support learners’ overall well-being.

This competence-based approach ensures that young migrants and refugees receive well-rounded support, helping them bridge learning gaps while preparing them for meaningful engagement in society.
